I would like to extend this opportunity to you again this year to purchase a Breast Cancer Awareness TShirt via the high school team I coach. All proceeds being donated to a local charity. The sale closes this Sunday so we can have all of the shirts delivered by the beginning of October. The link is here.
We have yet to pick the charity this year, but in the past we have given to Susan G. Komen, Stillwaters Cancer Support Services, the Leroy Butler Foundation, and Inheritance of Hope. In the past 4 years we have donated over $2400 to these causes. You can read more about those organizations and see previous years shirts at this link.
My Assistant Coach, Sarah, lost her Mom this past spring. We are working with her to pick this years charity.
But if you know me or the team, we are more than just selling the shirts or donating the money. Each charity that has received money has sent someone to talk to us, or we know someone that has greatly benefited from the group, or both. We use this as an education experience as well.
Our swim team obviously wants to swim fast and dive well, but part of the being in a group like our team is the positive impact we can make on other groups. Using our powers for good. This is why we do a food drive each year as well.
There is more in a student/athlete than just your athletic performances. These are character building events that have no measurable statistics on how great of a person you become in the future.
I encourage you to purchase a shirt. If you need it sent to you out of the area, leave a comment and we can work on that off line.
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Last season the team created a great T-Shirt on short notice and sold enough of them to be able to give $275 to the Susan G. Komen foundation of Wisconsin. It was fun and the kids did a great job selling the shirts.
This year we have upped the ante.
Our Team Captain started a Facebook page for the T Shirts. That increased visibility dramatically. We then turned the last meet of September into a fun thing called “Pack the Pool”. This is an effort to bring a little attention to the team. We are 18-3 at home over the past 5 seasons, and we now have new Touch Pads. AND, it will serve as the kick off to Breast Cancer Awareness month as well. With the goal to be able to sell a few more T Shirts.
As of this posting we have sold 249 shirts so far raising close to $700. We are hoping to sell a couple more to get that total a bit higher. This year we are looking at donating it to a local cause, the Stillwaters Cancer Support Services. Their Vision statement speaks volumes about their cause. It reads, “Stillwaters exists so no person affected by cancer will feel alone in their journey.”
I am proud to be associated with these young women. They truly understand what it means to give of themselves. It is hard to be a good student. It is hard to be a good athlete. It is hard to stay dedicated to your family. It is hard to raise money for the team to allow for better equipment that you many never fully get to utilize. It is hard to go out and collect food donations. It is hard to sell more things like T Shirts to collect funds to give away to someone else. BUT, each one of these girls is realizing what it means to be an active citizen. I remind them all the time that one of my goals is to make them better people first, and then make them better swimmers. Without the first, the second does not really matter to me.
With only 211 days until the 2011 Season Starts there is not a day that goes by that I do not try to come up with a new idea to promote the WNKM Swimming and Diving team. Not necessarily gimmicks, but ideas that will promote the sport, promote the school(s), and allow the student/athletes to have a positive experience.
First idea is to “Pack the Pool”. This should easily be done. It would be great to jam the pool with Students and have it a little chaotic in the pool area. WNKM is 15-3 at home in the past four seasons. Trying to generate some internal buzz in the school is good for everyone. And you never know when a pool or school record will fall. The bonus is that we could be done in conjunction with the kick off to Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Last season, we sold T-Shirts and raised close to $250.
A continuing idea was something that we already did last year, but this year we will make it bigger and better. And that is the Alumni Meet. Already scheduled for August 20th, this looks to have better events this year and a luncheon after the meet. Some of the Alumni are already getting prepared both physically and mentally for this grueling event.
There are a couple more ideas but I need to get them better organized before I get them published.
