Breast Cancer Awareness

2014 Think PinkBreast Cancer Awareness Month is October.

I would like to extend this opportunity to you again this year to purchase a Breast Cancer Awareness TShirt via the high school team I coach. All proceeds being donated to a local charity. The sale closes this Sunday so we can have all of the shirts delivered by the beginning of October.  The link is here.

We have yet to pick the charity this year, but in the past we have given to Susan G. Komen, Stillwaters Cancer Support Services, the Leroy Butler Foundation, and Inheritance of Hope. In the past 4 years we have donated over $2400 to these causes. You can read more about those organizations and see previous years shirts at this link.

My Assistant Coach, Sarah, lost her Mom this past spring. We are working with her to pick this years charity.

But if you know me or the team, we are more than just selling the shirts or donating the money.  Each charity that has received money has sent someone to talk to us, or we know someone that has greatly benefited from the group, or both. We use this as an education experience as well.

Our swim team obviously wants to swim fast and dive well, but part of the being in a group like our team is the positive impact we can make on other groups. Using our powers for good. This is why we do a food drive each year as well.

There is more in a student/athlete than just your athletic performances. These are character building events that have no measurable statistics on how great of a person you become in the future.

I encourage you to purchase a shirt. If you need it sent to you out of the area, leave a comment and we can work on that off line.

Time to live in the Present, Reflect on the Past, and Look towards the Future

The 2011 Season has come to a thrilling conclusion.  5 Swims in the Big Pool in Madison this past Saturday afternoon.  The results are here.

The banquet has come and gone.  Team Awards and Varsity/Junior Varsity letters are all handed out.  Sad to see it end.

Time to live in the Present, Reflect on the Past, and Look towards the Future.  The season had its ups and it downs.  We received some bumps and bruises on the way, but together we survived the entire process, and did some fantastic things.  This is one of best group of young women that I have been associated with in a very long time.

Season Started with a Bang!  Over 74,000 Meters swam, Food Drive for the Food Pantry, Alumni Meet, a Painted Office, a great deal of Food Eaten, and over $6300 raised during Swim-A-Polooza.  Our first real fundraiser in 5 years that had planning started back in April of the year.  Exciting first month.

September started with the Classic 8 Conference Relays and ended with a dual meet with Catholic Memorial which included all of us wearing our Breast Cancer Awareness shirts.  We had a good progress report type meet at Nicolet at the Knight Sprints.

October came in with our donation to Stillwaters Cancer Support Services and concluded with our Conference Meet.  The thrilling dual at Waukesha West was a highlight.

During this time frame is when we secured a private anonymous donor to help us fund a new scoreboard for the pool.  That project is still on going.

Sectionals and State were a blast!  Fastest Medley Relay in School History.  Broke a record that was set back in 1995.   Overall, three school records with the highest finish at State in a good number of years.

Now is the time to capitalize on our good fortunes, but there is no time to rest.  Each day we need to be getting better.  Time to Sharpen the Saw.  Time to make the things that worked even better, and time to get rid of the things that did not work.  Why not start that effort for the 2012 season today!

Breast Cancer Awareness Month

2010 Front

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.  Last season the team created a great T-Shirt on short notice and sold enough of them to be able to give $275 to the Susan G. Komen foundation of Wisconsin.  It was fun and the kids did a great job selling the shirts.

2010 Back

This year we have upped the ante.

Our Team Captain started a Facebook page for the T Shirts.  That increased visibility dramatically.  We then turned the last meet of September into a fun thing called “Pack the Pool”.  This is an effort to bring a little attention to the team.  We are 18-3 at home over the past 5 seasons, and we now have new Touch Pads.  AND, it will serve as the kick off to Breast Cancer Awareness month as well.  With the goal to be able to sell a few more T Shirts.

2011 Front

As of this posting we have sold 249 shirts so far raising close to $700.  We are hoping to sell a couple more to get that total a bit higher.  This year we are looking at donating it to a local cause,  the Stillwaters Cancer Support Services.  Their Vision statement speaks volumes about their cause.  It reads, “Stillwaters exists so no person affected by cancer will feel alone in their journey.”

2011 Back

I am proud to be associated with these young women.  They truly understand what it means to give of themselves.  It is hard to be a good student.  It is hard to be a good athlete.  It is hard to stay dedicated to your family.  It is hard to raise money for the team to allow for better equipment that you many never fully get to utilize.  It is hard to go out and collect food donations.  It is hard to sell more things like T Shirts to collect funds to give away to someone else.  BUT, each one of these girls is realizing what it means to be an active citizen.  I remind them all the time that one of my goals is to make them better people first, and then make them better swimmers.  Without the first, the second does not really matter to me.
