11 Facts about Kyle

  1. I am an Eagle Scout. A dying breed. Not many more good ones out there that understand how great of an honor this is
  2. Celebrated being married 20 years this past week by being at Girl Scout Camp with my entire family
  3. I have been an IT nerd since sophomore in high school when I joined Computer Homeroom.
  4. Marquette University High School is a great high school. Unless you attend class there, you will never fully understand the bond that an all male high school can have.
  5. Met my lovely bride in fact #2 freshman year at Carroll College. Her first impression of me was not great. Ask her about it sometime 🙂
  6. Swimming has been a passion of mine for a long time. Coached 16 years at Divine Savior Holy Angles before moving to Waukesha North in 2007. I will be eternally grateful to Peggy Braun for taking a chance on me to coach.
  7. Hate the fact that there is not enough time in the day or week or month to staff fully connected with my friends from High School and College. No matter how much time is carved out, there is still not enough
  8. Traveling to Australia during January of 1991 will always be one of the greatest trips of my life
  9. It has taken this long to get to my passion for sports and fantasy sports? Something is wrong. ESPN is a mandatory channel selection and the NFL RedZone is the greatest thing ever invented. Fantasy football is something that I take serious but it does help with fact #7
  10. Same with Golf. Enjoy playing golf or as my brother calls it “Hit and Chase”. No course is a garbage course when playing gold, well except for Portage Country Club. That is a Dog Track
  11. My real brother Brian, lives 5 houses from me, and “my bro” lives 0.5 miles away from me. My real brother is often accused of being older, although I am 4.5 years older. “My Bro” is Jim. At Girl Scout camp, a number of the younger campers often thin we are brothers.

11 Answers for Dana:

1. Why did you start blogging, and why? Really wanted to capture my thoughts while practicing to write more. Most of you know that I have a million things in my head at one time and I thought this would help get them out in an organized way. Sometimes yes, sometimes no.

2. If you could go anywhere in the world, right now, where would you go, and why?
As long as I can take Michelle with me, we are going back to Australia. Just something about the people and the culture that is so much fun

3. If you had the chance to travel back in time or into the future, which would you pick, and what would you want to see/find out?

Social Media for Good

Most of the time I try to use my powers for good instead of evil.  And almost all of the time my social media circles have NOT let me down.  I was recently looking for a new home and auto insurance provider and within minutes I had over 8 recommendations.  I used one of those suggestions.  The list goes on and on.

In the past I have always tried to give more than I have asked.  I think it is one of the key pieces to making social media work.

I now have another request.

The swim team I coach uses donations for part of our fundraiser.  Just like every other team and social organization, we are looking for ways to get ahead to make our program better.

What we do in return is that for any organization that donates time or product worth $100 or more will get their name on the back of our event TShirt that the kids wear that entire day and when they are out in the community.  If you are a person from an organization that may be able to donate a team meal or cases or water or massage services or you name, please send me a private/direct message.

Social Media

As most of you know, I am really into Social Media.  I really do believe that the good/positive aspects out weigh the negative.  And as with most things in life, if you let it control you and your actions it will.

As an example, I have successfully used these tools to promote and inform the swim team I coach.  In fact we are now doing volunteer time sign up via a tool.

For non profits and myself it is easy.  We are not really asking for much in return.  We listen and assist when we can.

From the Business side, my company is doing the same thing.  We educate and promote product and act as a good listener.  We have yet to convert social media into any form of tangible, traceable, profitable event.  But I think we are close.

This is where I could use your help.  Usually I do not ask for much from my social media friends, because I think as a principle it is always better to assist friends than to be be asking for help.  Most of you know that is true.  However, my company is in a Social Madness contest and could use your vote.

Please goto http://www.bizjournals.com/milwaukee/exclusives/socialmadness and vote for BPI Inc. Thanks in Advance and put me down for owing you one!!

Integrating Social Media

I have been working hard on creating a slide deck on how to Integrate Social Media into your High School Swim program.  This presentation could be changed for any high school sport, but was really created with the team I coach in mind.

Most of the slides stand on their own just fine, but to do real justice, at some point I will either need to present it OR have voice over on the slides.

My contact information is at the end, and I am more than willing to answer all questions on this.

Aquatic Center

Over the past couple of weeks I have taken some good-natured kidding about me using my small bit of influence to change the name of where the team practices from pool to Aquatics Center.

It is the cool place to be

The story behind it is relatively simple.

I have stated over and over that the role of a head coach has changed dramatically in the past 20 years.  We still coach, and we still develop student/athletes into strong, smart thinking adults.  But the additional pieces of being a Public Relations Expert, and a Fundraising Guru, and Social Media Master allow a coach to take some choices to help his team in a positive way.

When we started working on Swim-A-Polooza #1, we were in a North Booster Club meeting, and I just blurted out that if we were going to go through all the work of a 5 year plan which started with a new timing system, touch pads, and a scoreboard that we would need to call our 6 lane, 25 meters of space something bigger and better.  It had to have a clever name that made people want to come and see it.

Our friends on Roberts Avenue already have the name Natatorium.  So that was out.

The first thing that came out of my mouth was Waukesha North Aquatic Center.  Instantaneously it gained momentum with the Booster club.  I took the idea to my place of work, and the image that is in this post was created.

The rest is history.

The touch pads and timing system survived the boys season.  The main unit has been loaned out once to the Natatorium while theirs could be repaired.  The electrical is complete for the new scoreboard.  Planning for Swim-a-Polooza II will start soon.   All things that happen in an Aquatic Center. 🙂

Know it!  Love It!  Live It!

2011 Slideshow

Just in case everyone did not see the Slideshow at the banquet or did not happen to see it on Facebook, it is below.  This was first shown the day after the WIAA State Meet at our end of season Team Banquet.

Golf as it Relates to Social Media

Got the clubs out and hit the ball on Friday and today. Now I know there are tons of comparisons between life and golf. Things like the hazards being compared to things that jump into your path to slow you down.

But I think there is a also a comparison between social media and golf. My example today will be between playing in a scramble and how it compares to social media.

A scramble is when each player in a team tees off on each hole, and the players decide which shot was best. Every player then plays their second shot from within a club length of where the best shot has come to rest, and the procedure is repeated until the hole is finished.

But during that time some people contribute more, some play a supporting cast, and some are just along for the ride and the beer.

As that relates to social media……

There are people that are strong contributors in social media. People that make a positive contribution. These are the people that are clutch in your scramble with the monster drive from the tee box. They are real leaders in social media.

There are the people that hit the safe shot so the big risk takers can attempt to reach the green in two for the long par 5. The safe shot people in social media are the on the plus of dabbling. They are working hard to figure it out and more times than not that are doing good work in social media.

Those along for the ride…they think that Social Media is just about making money. Just keep pumping product and pumping sales. They are not good for your golf outing and not good for social media either.
