And we are Underway….

After spending the past 6 months working on quotes, numbers, meetings…the big unveiling occurred tonight at the Waukesha North Booster Club meeting.  Until this point, it was just a dream.  A dream that includes one day, having a home swim meet where all the starting, timing, and scoreboards work for every event.

System 6

We brought in the Colorado System 4 that was giving to us back in 1994.  We brought in a touch pad that has banana clips that are broken off.  We brought in the Daktronics HS100 starter that is all rusted.

We discussed the fact that we had to borrow a touch pad from our good friend and Head Coach Brian Wright at Waukesha West to allow us to have 6 touch pads working for our dual meets.  We talked about how we switched touch pads in the middle of a 400 Free during the season.  We also talked about how key it is to having functional equipment when you are setting pool records.

We talked about how in the past four years the team has produced 13 individual event WIAA State Qualifiers, and 7 relay event Qualifiers.  In addition to that the team has produced 20 Academic All-Americans, and this past season the team had a GPA of 3.843 on a 4.0 scale.

The team is 15-3 at home over the past 4 seasons.

We talked about how we are creating an environment where Student/Athletes can be strong leaders.  In fact, my 2 Captains for next season came to the meeting.  That along with their parents.

It will be a long process.  It is going to take a good deal of work and support.  Luckily, we are working with a great core of parents that have been “All IN” since the beginning.

A couple of fund raisers are in process to assist in the process.  We will continue to investigate all possibilities for larger donations.

And the dream is underway….

Social Media – It is Not for Everyone

I have come the realization that Social Media is not for everyone.  There will always be those people that are critical of tools like Twitter, Facebook, Foursquare, LinkedIn….  And I think it has partial to do with not knowing about the tools and how they work, but more with the fact that they do not see the value in using the tools.

Once we can show the value in using the tools, I think more of the naysayers will change their position.

It is not about what I did today.

It is not about self promotion.

It is not that I want to be heard.

It is not to prove that I have a worth to society.

It is not about instant gratification

It is not about immediate returns

It is not easy

It is not about having the most followers, the most friends, the most contacts

It is not just for teenagers or the “younger crowd”

It is not Customer Service

It IS because they are conversation tools that build relationships.

It IS because they are ways to contribute to the betterment of the business and industry I am involved, and society as a whole.

It IS because they aide in collaboration for projects, getting job, researching a new product, etc

It IS because they make a real connection.  A human connection to another human being.

It IS because they build a community of people that have similar interests.

It IS because they share information.  Information is power.  The quality of your information allows you start the IS list over again!

To Block or De Friend – That is the Question

Now that the Super Bowl is over and the Packers are SuperBowl Champions, it is time to fall back into reality.  It was a long and fun 22 weeks of Football.

Got done voting today, and thought about all the things I read on Facebook about the events circulating around voting today and protests being held against our current Governor.

I have come to the conclusion that I am just going to block or De-Friend people on Facebook.  Sure I may be a bit cynical, but I am done reading negative comments about “this job”, or “this politician”, or “this/that Sports team”.  It has been carried over the edge and frankly, it disappoints me that we as a society have gotten to this point.

My Cousin, was inducted into the Burlington High School (Home of the Demons) this past weekend.  Nice ceremony and it was great to see him be able to get back to Wisconsin from his Navy duties.  But as we were waiting for the festivities to begin, there was a sign in the cafeteria to remind students to think before they send a text, post a message on Facebook or MySpace, or post something on Twitter.  It is a good message for all of us, not just high school students.

So, back to the topic.  I will just probably start blocking people from my News Feed.  I am sure that some of you have already blocked me.  But I am going to make an effort to start keeping my posts positive and insightful and associate more with people that share that same perspective.
